The Parc y Werin Youth Committee
The youngest of our community delivering the bold ideas.
The Parc y Werin Youth Committee was founded on Tuesday 3rd November 2015. The main purpose of this under-eighteen committee is to help give a prospective from the youngest of our community. They will help design ideas for events, logos and slogans and also tell the general committee what they would like to see at Parc y Werin. Local primary and comprehensive schools have been consulted about this committee and representatives have been put forward. The youth committee will meet with officers no less than six times a year and will attend a full committee meeting at least once a year. Meeting dates, once confirmed and displayed above. Currently eleven youths sit on the committee. By joining this committee, members will not only gain a positive additions to their CV's but will receive vouchers for fee entry to any of our events with an admission charge. To join the committee simply fill in the application form below and submit to a committee member or visit the agendas page for a committee date.
The Parc y Werin Youth Committee update (July to December 2016)
At the beginning of summer, we tasked the youth committee with designing a universal uniform for us, for them and for our volunteers. The briefing was simple, it had to be bright and eye catching! We went to local stores in Gorseinon, consulting on colours and our youth committee at one of their meetings discussed our findings. There was a long debate over the best colours but in the end, we had a clear consensus.
The youth committee’s uniform consists of an orange t-shirt, with the committee logo on the crest and back with the words ‘Member of the Parc y Werin Youth Committee’. The general committee’s uniform consists of a sky-blue polo shirt, with the committee logo on the crest and back with the words ‘Member of the Parc y Werin Committee’. Our volunteers uniform consists of a sky-blue polo shirt, with the committee logo on the crest and back with the words ‘Volunteer of the Parc y Werin Committee’. The uniforms were well received at events. The youth committee then found a sponsor to pay for their uniform designs. We would like to thank Seager Restaurants for their generous donation.
The youth committees first opportunity to show off their new uniform was at our summer play sessions programme. The youth committee also helped with the running of the session, influencing what activities and games were put on. They also helped in setting up and down. One of the youth committee’s favourite task over the play sessions was helping the secretary in running the Parc y Werin water slide! Our secretary said “the youth committee were an absolute necessity in the play sessions, they helped and guided us well. The manners in which they showed the community was outstanding and we couldn’t be more proud of them”.
You might have also noticed our youth committee at Gorseinon Carnival! Our youth committee and chairwoman were lucky enough to walk in the carnival processions with donation buckets. We would like to thank the community for their generous support and donations at that event. Our youth members were very proud of the money they personally raised.
However, the biggest event of the summer for us was also organised by our youth committee. On Sunday 7 August 2016, the Parc y Werin Committee turned one year old and the youth committee decided to celebrate in style with a summer family fun day the day before. At the event, we had a fire engine from the Mid and West Wales Fire Service, many stalls selling wonderful crafts, inflatable entertainment, sports lessons from local teams and representatives of the Ospreys, a play session, attendance from Keep Wales Tidy and much more. The event was well attended with over 200 people joining us throughout the day. The youth committee were really pleased, and rightly so, at their first meeting after the event. A member of the public commented “it’s wonderful to see so many young people engaged, the park has a bright future ahead!”. Soon after the event the youth committee was gripped by election fever! For the business year 2016/17 the youth committee was asked to elect three of its members the official representatives. These representatives will go on to meet with the general committee at least four times a year, attend special meetings (such as one in the Senned) and will be the face of the committee for the next year. After much discussion, a decision was reached. The representatives for the youth committee this year are Ryan Jones, Carys Clayfield and Mollie O’Connell. We look forward to working with them more closely over the next year. Our youth committee organised meeting with representatives of the parks department of the city council. They shared their ideas for the park and shared their views of the current school development plans. The youth committee don’t wish to stop there either; they have requested a meeting with the local member of parliament. This is hopefully to be arranged in the new year. Finally, we and the youth committee are pleased to report an increase in membership. The Parc y Werin Youth Committee has seen a 44.44% increase in membership taking the total to 13. We have thirteen members of the Parc y Werin Committee aged between four and seventeen.
